The Essential Guide to Droids (Page 30-31)

Medical: MD Medical Specialist
[edit]2-1Bs might be the most advanced medical droids in the galaxy, but the various models in the MD series are by far the most common. Introduced decades ago, original Emdee units are still in widespread use, and new units are produced every day on the factory moon of Telti.
The familiar body style is reminiscent of the newer Too-Onebee, which isn’t surprising considering Industrial Automaton’s ownership of both products. Key differences in the MD units include more humanlike hands and the use of an insulated sheath to protect delicate mechanisms. They also are more dependent on mainframe computers for data and generally don’t function as well outside a hospital bay. All Emdees look largely alike, but each type has specialized attachments depending on its model number. Currently, there are ten models.
MD-0s are diagnostic units that examine symptoms and identify possible ailments from an internal database. Their dexterous hands sport two opposable thumbs, and they are equipped with thermometers, X-ray scanners, magnetic resonance imagers, and diagnostic gauges. On occasion, Emdee-0s are fitted with cognitive matrix analysis packages for analyzing psychological disorders.
Emdee-Ones serve as laboratory technicians for governments or large genetic research corporations. Programmed with advanced inquiry patterns, they isolate pathogens, detoxify poisons, and develop vaccines, usually under the supervision of an organic specialist.
Emdee-Twos are anesthesiologists. Their hands are modified breath masks, and they are experts in alien biological susceptibility to various anesthetic gasses. They also dispense epidural perigen and localized numbing agents.
Emdee-Threes work as pharmacists, measuring proper medicinal dosages and filling prescriptions. Some Hutt crime lords keep Emdee-Threes busy preparing their private stashes of glitterstim, lesai, and other illegal narcotics.
Emdee-Fours perform microsurgery, though they have since been supplanted in popularity by the more versatile Too-Onebee. Their fingertips contain near-microscopic extensions for careful, precise work.
Emdee-Fives, the most common Emdees, are general practitioner units advertised by IA as the "country doctors of space." Ideal for extended freighter missions, they can capably treat most injuries but lack the sophistication for cyborging or intensive surgery. Smaller, repulsorlift-driven variants of the Emdee-Five are used aboard cramped voyages where space is at a premium.
Industrial Automaton hasn’t let their distinguished MD line die off. Emdee-Sixes were built exclusively for the Empire. Emdee-Sevens, experts in emergency trauma, and two successive models were sold only as prototypes in limited sectors.
Emdee-Tens were introduced only recently, but are looking to be a breakout success. With each Emdee-Ten a specialist in a particular field such as cardiology, neurology, obstetrics, or dentistry, IA has endeared itself to niche practitioners and ensured the future of the MD series.
